Other Heroes is a group exhibition surveying a wide swath of artists, from historical innovators to seasoned veterans to young up and coming webcomics creators. Artists participating in Other Heroes include Eisner Award winning artist/writer/publisher Kyle Baker (Birth of A Nation, Nat Turner), illustrator and Black Entertainment Television Senior Vice President of Animation Denys Cowan (Static Shock, Batman), cartoonist and social activist Keith Knight (The K Chronicles, (Th)ink), and pioneering syndicated cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Torchy Brown Heatbeats, Patty Jo ‘n Ginger).

Because a need for diversity is the impetus for Other Heroes, the intention of the show is neither to segregate a demographic of sequential artists nor to establish a fixed canon of artists who epitomize sequential art. Rather, Other Heroes seeks to continue the work of explicating the limitless possibilities of the comics medium as a whole by celebrating the contributions of an influential segment of the culture.

The Other Heroes show is set to premiere at Jackson State University. The reason we picked this site is because a large number of Hurricane Katrina survivors have settled in the area. Mississippi was hit extremely hard by this natural disaster. The state lost over seventy percent of its total revenue because of the loss of its extremely profitable gambling businesses on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Other Heroes is an effort to bring a spirit of positivity and possibility to some of the displaced children and adults in the area. We feel that this show will be an important step in helping to rebuild confidence, self-esteem, and hope.

Other Heroes will be the show that gives African-American characters and creators in contemporary American comics their deserved recognition. It will highlight African American cartoonists, comic book illustrators, and sequential artists past and present that have helped shape the contemporary form of the comics medium. In addition, the exhibition will showcase works of illustration, painting and photography that feature African American characters and archetypes that populate the medium, an investigation of context and representation as well as a needed and timely showcase for talented sequential artists of color.

All profits from the sale of the Other Heroes catalog will be donated to Scholarship America, to the non profit’s Disaster Relief Fund, which helps low income Gulf Coast students displaced by Katrina and Rita seek post secondary education.
